The main differences if you compare a digital camera below $100 with the more expensive models are these:
1. Fewer Megapixels. This usually wont matter much to the average photographer. Unless you need to greatly enlarge your pictures and print them out, you have nothing to worry about.

2. No Optical Zoom Lens. Most of these cameras have no optical zoom which can be pretty bad. Still I have found that if you spend some time searching for the right camera you can find some great digital cameras under $100 with 3x optical zoom. Just keep looking until you find one that fits your needs.

3. Lower Build Quality. This can’t be avoided and doesn’t matter much. At normal usage my cheap cameras have lasted very long. If it breaks after 2 years, who cares you just buy a new one.

4. Longer Shutter Delay. You should stick to taking pictures in well lit areas. In bad light conditions these cameras really suck.

So the conclusion to buying a digital camera under $100 is that everyone should have one. You can bring it everywhere and never have to worry it will get stolen and ruined. The best photos I have taken is with my cheapest digital cameras since I always carry one with me. Every serious photographer should carry one or two of the cheaper digital cameras. Actually when the prices are as low as they are now, everyone should carry at least one of the cheaper digital cameras.
